Our Story

Sausalito Craftworks Inc., the parent company of Omnirax, was founded in 1974 by Alan Jewett. We make jewelry. As manufacturers of the finest brass, copper & sterling silver bracelets in America, we still fabricate our original designs by hand, using the same care and sophisticated techniques associated with the finest precious metal jewelry. Our extensive selection of complementary earrings offers ultimate fashion versatility. We sell to fine gift shops, galleries and boutiques all across the country. Our continuing mission is to provide quality products of extremely high perceived value at affordable prices, supported by consistently great service.

Twenty years ago Alan, who is also a musician, bought his first synth module from our local music store, Bananas at Large. He brought it home and found himself asking what is now an all too familiar question, "So, where am I gonna put it?"

We’ve always had a woodshop. Alan liked to work with wood, and we needed a place to make the point-of-purchase displays that the stores we sold our jewelry to placed on their counters. Our furniture- quality displays were, and still are, attractive, user-friendly and guaranteed to increase sales. Other manufacturers begged us to design and produce point-of-purchase displays for them. Several stores we sold to asked us to design and build them modular store fixtures. So we did. A second business had evolved.

Unable to find a studio rack to fit his needs, Alan designed a 12-space slant rack made out of oak plywood. We built two of them. Alan took one to his studio and the other up to Bananas. They sold theirs that weekend. Omnirax was born!

Our first application specific piece of furniture was the CW30, designed around the Alesis 1622 rack-mount mixer. We attached a desk (WDA) to the CW30 to hold a keyboard controller, and added a riser with 12 rack spaces (RR12) to hold "slave" synths, effects devices, etc. Now we were a modular system.

When Herbie Hancock stopped at our very first NAMM booth, said we were "cool", and bought an Oak CW30 for his home studio, we knew we were on the right track. It was the start of a beautiful relationship. Subsequently, we worked closely with him to identify his particular studio furniture requirements and to design his ideal keyboard composing workstation. We modified some existing Omnirax models, which we integrated with other fully customized designs, to provide Herbie with a thoroughly personalized creative environment. We realized then that "application specific" isn’t always enough. Omnirax Custom and "Semi-Custom" had arrived.

Our early association with Digidesign was the first in a continuing series of our being in the right place at the right time. We were just beginning to grasp the principles and requirements of a "midi" set-up, when along came Pro Tools - and the need for the first Digital Audio Studio Furniture Workstation. In those days not everyone had a computer. This was cutting-edge technology. We went down to Menlo Park, asked questions and listened to the answers. The Digi user’s need was not a rack or a desk, but a workstation "environment" where one could comfortably and creatively edit music in the digital domain. The result of that collaboration was the ProStation. The painstaking ergonomic considerations and signature design elements that have gone into every Omnirax workstation developed since then, were first presented as a total package in this breakthrough model. We are proud to have been one of Digidesign’s original  Development Partners – and we still are.
